Learning- futures

On the 20th of November I had an interesting talk with Thomas, which made me thinking harder on my essay, it's going to be a very difficult thing to write about. But I will do my best.
We came up with an idea of instore installations and their kinds and how they influence an experience whilst shopping..

I will arrange a presentation for Monday so I feel more confident in that topic..

Learning-Laboratory

I had a very nice tutorial with Nilgin yesterday (20th of November)
We discussed the title of my research and how the rest of the work's been going.
I have edited the actual film earlier today, so I am pretty glad I now can start writing an essay..
Nilgin gave a really valuable advice on how I can narrow down the theme of an essay and recommended to write and research around how the sound selected for the fashion films can represent or translate the idea and the philosophy of a brand..
Which is truly incredible.
That's what I love.
So after that,  I went to the library and selected a few books on representation and branding..
I will also select the three different examples to explore the topic..

FASHION LABORATORY: RESEARCH

This is a review of a book of Russell Lack, "Four frames Under"

"there were precendents for the conventions of cinema, of course, and no less for film music, although flm represented something of a technological quantum jump forward.."
(p.9)

"the chase sequency id important as it illustrates a tendency amongst the early film makers to try to escape from the text-based device of an inter title card.."
(p.7)

"by 1929 European alternative sound systems had sprung up. and with them monopoly positions on exhibition,...
The sound era arrived not through any kind of stylistic choice on the part of film makers, themselves, but through the efficient exploitation of a range of competing technologies, each designed to exclude alternatives"
(p.19)

"Possibly the more successful in terms of entertainment vaue- was a live spokedn accompaniment presented by actors or comedians" (p.20)

"Since the majority of silent films were shot without much of a creative consideration for the sounds or music that would accompany them, it is important to make a decision between those film and those that were shot with the intention of being sound-synchronised during their exhibition or 'performance' " (p.42)

"The link between the silent and sound eras was the musical short a form that ensured jazz reached jazz influenced more mainstream film music" (p.45)

MASS EXHIBITION & PERFORMANCE
"The music-hall culture established itself in Britain during the second half of a century as the most popular form of mass-entertainment was mirrored in other countries" (p.47)

"Mass exhibition and a high turnover of audiences became something of a science.." ".. A further development was he employment of stage singers who led audiences in collective sing-alongs .." (p.49)

"the enduring symbol of he silent era, the lone piano player seated in front of the cinema screen, was something akin to a lightning conductor" (p.59)

"An important aspect of musical reception is obviously the private experiences and values that we bring with the listeners.." (p.65)

"both music and language are based upon an articulation of sound into discernible units and a kind of grammar, although in case of music this grammar may be metaphorical."

(p.176)

"Between written language and its prounanced sound lies a world of discontinuity. Saussure differentiated two orders of that relationship:
The SYNTAGMATIC element of language has to do with the positioning of a sign in any particular sentence; PARADIGMATIC elements are the relationship of a signle word to other words, which might have filled its place but have been displaced by it." (p.177)

CRITICAL LANGUAGE AND MUSIC

"The repetition of key musical phrases i the soundtrack seems to offer the listener a kei with which to unlock the whole mystery, both of the fragmented music and of the apparent passage of souls of sould between VERONIKA AND veronque. The tremendous emotional impact of the music might partly cosist of this feeling of being on the edge of understanding it." (p.181)

Research Fashion Futures

So, in this post there is an example and a proof, in a way, of how fashion insiders with the innovative vision towards the era of digital can "rule the business world". This is Angela Ahrendts, an ex-CEO-of-Burberry-to-be from the next year on, she moves to Apple
A huge influence of her vision made Burberry's strategy lean towards digital and the use of the new technologies in order to build an appropriate and innovative view to what a brand should be like..

These are the articles of Metro and Evening Standard from the same day..

and here's what the recent Burberry SS14 show looked like, and it was filmed on the recent version of iPhone..

LEARNING FASHION LABORATORY

13/11/13
So we had a guest lecturer cancelled, so we started off sharing our ideas on the films again,
I showed my storyboard and heard some critique.

outcomes:

1)The main new point was given by Nilgin, who said that might be too obvious to announce each stage of my hero's path through the story..
2)Good that Andy reminded me of how they didn't move the camera during the times of the silent film, neither there was a zoom in/out techniques, so it's good he made me recall it was more 'like a theatre, a staged performance and the camera was still'.

Learning- Fashion Laboratory

30th of October

We had a dream-come-true lecture with Lynden from Domino Records.
She mentioned all the things I'm fascinated with during the first part of the session, then she went more formal, explaining the most important points of how licensing works when using the audio material in your project.
Was really important, I think, I faced the situations when I came to the UK, as I had that question in my head but had no clue of how to answer it. When using the music/ songs, who do I approach if I wanna use it- When? How? on what Terms? and What if I use it? Now I have a somewhat idea how it works in the UK!
Then she gave out some free CDs as a gift from Domino and shared an amazing chance to use some of the music of the artists of Domino Records on legal terms. This is such a great chance! I feel blessed!

The last part of the session was dedicated to showing our films. I really enjoyed working on the project, so I felt ready to share it with the others. The feedback was really nice, and I could tell Lynden liked it, which is very important. I am happy that the rest of the teams showed some nice ideas as well.
The group is really full of creative individuals which is so inspiring!

Outcome:
-music free to use in the next film for school
-feedback on film
-new knowledge and connections
